A core principle of the Rhodes Run is to ensure the broader community of Rhodes benefits from the run. A portion of revenue generated by the run is donated to local initiatives to address pressing needs in the community. This year, the identified cause was done in partnership with the MINA foundation, supported by KISCH IP. Runners are also encouraged to donate goods, clothing and blankets for distribution to families that are struggling in Zakhele.
MINA Foundation
KISCH IP & the MINA Foundation arranged an outreach programme to Rhodes and Zakhele women. The MINA foundation sent a team of facilitators to empower young women in school and in the community in matters related to menstruation. The faciltators, Hlubi and Regina Mary, took attendees through an inspirational workshop to learn about their bodies, menstruation and menstrual products. A key focus is on re-useable products which can reduce waste and environmental impacts. One product is the MINA cup – a re-usable, silicon menstrual cup. Attendees all received a cup – a total of 200 were handed out over the 2 days!
Handover of items collected from runners & crew
Eight families benefitted from a range of dry and tinned groceries, personal hygiene products, warm clothes and blankets. These were all donated by runners and support crew who visited Rhodes during the run. The goods were shared between a number of families who have long been in the village and are experience severe financial challenges. The items were handed over at the Rhodes Info Centre.
